The Real Iron Man.

On Saturday, the 21st of May a man will say good-bye in the Bernabeu, the stadium of the club that he loved with his heart and his soul and served for during 14 years, Real Madrid. A deserved official honour for the "lost son", Fernando Hierro.
In summer 1989, when the 21-year-old Fernandito heard that he should play for Real Madrid, the club he loved since he was a kid, he couldn't believe it. That time he just had finnished two years in the Premiera Division with Valladolid. The dream came true for the young talent from Malaga, but that he will be seen as a Real Madrid legend 15 years later, nobody would ever have thought of that. And least of all the modest man himself. But he always came far with hard work. He stayed longer in training sessions to exercise free-kicks and long precise balls. A hard work on and off the pitch that payed off.
Paired with the experience during time he became a voice of the team and the club. A young andalusian that dreamt in white now became one that breaths and lives Real Madrid.
Added on Hierro's defensive qualities, he was such a prolific goal scorer, especially from set pieces, that he was briefly Spain's record goal scorer with 29 goals in 89 caps. He scored 107 Liga goals, 104 of them with RM in 438 games and 16 goals in 101 European games. He was intimidating and had the command of his area and a master of set pieces. He never saw himself as a pure defender, and his stats prove him. "I'm a defender by definition, but not at heart. I've always maintained that I'm a defender with the heart and soul of a forward. I never felt like I should dedicate myself entirely to defending.".
On 24th of March 2002 Fernando Hierro struck a hat-trick to lead Real Madrid to a 3-1 win at home to Real Zaragoza on Sunday and preserve his side's slim lead at the top of the Spanish first division. Just one day after his 34th birthday. "It's satisfying to see a player with Hierro's great track record demonstrating his enormous talent," Real coach Vicente del Bosque said. For being one of the best european defenders by his time his statement, "but honestly, deep down, I know I wasn't born to defend", seems ironic. When Real Madrid won their first Champions League in 32 years in 1998 it was because Hierro fought hard to thwart the marauding Juventus attack. That performance has been adjudged as his best display ever. Hes helped Real Madrid to win 5 ligas, 1 King's Cup, 3 Champions' Leagues, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 4 spanish and 1 european Supercup during his 14 years with the club.
Although his tactical brilliance and his leadership qualities that brought him the nickname "El Jefe" (the boss), his legs were gone, he's too slow, the spanish press vowed. While his colleague Steve McManaman thinks highly of his personal qualities: "I think he's the most wonderful player. It's the way we play sometimes leaves him vulnerable. That's all it is. He is the greatest centre-half I'll ever play with by far… his distribution, his passing. He can play everywhere. He's won everything. He's the most decorated player. He's not self-promoting about how much he's won and stuff, but real football people know how good he is… the rest doesn't matter. "
According to Sarah Edworthy in "El Macca-5 years with Real Madrid" "Meeting Hierro is a privilege in itself, for it its impossible to overestimate the authority carried by the thirty-five-year old Grand Old Man"
It was on a Sunday in early September 2000. I was standing outside of the Bernabeu. I just witnessed a training that was held in the Bernabeu because the B-Team had a match in Ciudad Deportiva. I was wainting for the players to come out and hoping that they had a while to stop and give autographs. Figo, Raul, Karanka, Helguera and the rest of the team, even officials like Chendo had left already till we asked Campo where his captain was. He said he was still inside, friendly signed autographs made some jokes and left.
Like Steve McManaman told later: "Hes last out. He takes his time, then gets a long massage, he'll come out when he's ready, probably when everyone's gone."

We, that means a handful of madridistas, weren't gone when he came out, instead we patiently waited about half an hour more. Then he came, but not like the others in his car, no, on foot! He gently walked out and suddenly it caught all of us, an amazing atmosphere that was coming from him, an aura that's really hard to describe, you must have lived. Patiently he fullfilled all autograph and picture wishes before he went to the bar inside the shopping mall "Esquina del Bernabeu", right next to the puerta. I stood there for a while, impressed by this personality that showed his dignity to the fans and staying with both his feet very much to the ground. A simple, quiet man that has an aura that only a few people have. An impression that he not only left on me, but also on Sarah Edworthy: "He has warm eyes, and shows a friendly receptiveness and sense of humor that clashes with his battle-hardened, referee-challenging on-field image."
According Steve McManaman nothing worked without the "yes" of Hierro. Maybe that was what finally paved his shocking release from RM after his fallout with president Perez. An "adiós" that was a massive shock, how Steve McManaman later admitted. "The whole winning-the-league celebration was a bit odd, but what hurt most were the departures". Sports-director Jorge Valdano called it "the end of a cycle", and he had no idea how right he was with that.
Del Bosque, who's been shown the door at the same day commented: "When Fernando left, we lost one of the finest players in Spanish football. I was fortunate to have worked with him in my time here, and he always gave everything he had for the team. He was an exemplary player on and off the pitch and gave his all for the team and the club. He was sometimes criticised for that, but Fernando always acted in the best interests of Real Madrid."
He did not deserve leaving the club this way all what he has done to Real Madrid. He lived it with his love, success and passion. Its this love to the club we fans appreciate so much. And it really breaks a true fan's heart to see him leave like that.
His own career wasn't over though. He joined Qatari side Al Rayyan on a one-year contract, before signing for Bolton at the start of the current campaign. While Madrid have not won a major trophy since, Hierro has scored two goals in 28 Premiership appearances for Bolton to help the English side qualify for Europe for the first time.
Last week, after 18 years of professional football, he now has announced to hang up his boots with the words: "It's the right time to go. I'm bowing out at the top and I feel proud." We feel proud to have known him, to have been witnessed a legend. What remains is the remembrance on a legend in football and a great personality. To say it simple with Jay-Jay Okocha's words: "there's no doubt that we'll miss him". Football will miss him.
In February he told fifaworldcup.com "Once I've quit playing then I'll start thinking about what it is I really want to do next. Football has been my life. It's what gives me the most satisfaction, which is why I want to carefully consider my next move." But we and Vicente del Bosque hope that he keeps the faith with football: "I don't know if he will go into coaching but he should remain in football because he has a special gift for it."

Hierro today, gone tomorrow
Bolton's Spanish legend declares his intention to retire at the end of the season
The Guardian,
Monday May 9, 2005
Former Spain and Real Madrid defender Fernando Hierro has stunned Bolton Wanderers supporters by announcing that he will draw the curtain on his career at the end of this season.
"I'm clear about the decision but I wanted to leave it while I'm still playing at a high level," the 37-year-old defender told Radio Marca today. Hierro, who made a record 89 international appearances as an outfield player for Spain, joined Bolton on a one-year contract last July after a season in Qatar playing
He joined Real Madrid from Valladolid in 1989 and went on to help the team win six Spanish league titles and three European Cups during his 14 years at the club.
He was discarded by Real along with coach Vicente del Bosque a day after the club won the league title in June 2003. Real have not won a major trophy since the two men left.

"Real Madrid have given me everything"
He said good bye. He hung his kit, because as Raúl said, with his departure, “the captain of captains is going”. Next Saturday he will step once more onto the grass at Bernabéu, the time when the Club will pay homage to him. “I´m very grateful to the Club, because they are offering me the opportunity to say thank you to the Madrid fans for all the affection they have shown me”, Fernando Hierro said during an interview given to Realmadrid.com. The number ‘4’ player is clear: “This Club has given me everything”. He says that he would like to be remembered as a good professional and as an honest person”. An open review to 18 years of professionalism. Captain´s word.
How have things gone in England?
It has been a very nice experience, I would say, great. It has been a complete experience at a personal, family and professional level. I have received an exemplary treatment from Bolton, my team mates and the fans. I can only say that I am leaving England very happy.
What did you discover in order for you to talk like that after just one season at Bolton?
I have discovered the feeling of affection, respect… to receive so many demonstrations of affection when you have only been a year in one team has been the most surprising thing.
Why have you decided to finish your career as a footballer?
Because I thought it was the time. I reckoned it was the best thing for my life, my future and definitely, this bunch of feelings that drive me to decide that it was the ideal moment to leave. It is a very difficult decision to take because while we can play, players we have the temptation to keep on and they gave me the opportunity to play one more year … It has been complicated because I said no when they were calling me almost every day to tell me that they wanted to negotiate with me for me to stay. But well, I think that it was a question of reality and I was very clear about my reality, I knew that it would be my last year.
From the distance you have followed the Spanish League, what do you think of the season Madrid have done?
Nobody can say they didn´t end up fighting for the League. In the last games Barcelona have stood well the pressure that Madrid were putting when the day before they were winning the games. They have been more regular during the whole year, but I liked the good feelings that Madrid left for next year.
Nobody can deny that the end of the season has made everybody hopeful about the future.
Real Madrid, because of everything they represent , always give hope. In this Club, resides what you have done the previous season, you always go out as candidate for the title the next year. This is what people must have clear. You cannot look backwards, you must look forward. You must start with your mind focused on winning.
Have the players been excessively criticized sometimes?
The players have it clear: At Real Madrid when you win titles everything is great and gratifying but when you lose everything becomes really hard. This is the grandee of the Club, you know that all the games have an extraordinary repercussion and in all of them you are obliged to get a result, because of the past they must fight until the last minutes for all the titles. But it must be taken into account that it´s very complicated to stand this level of exigency.
Personally, what feeling do you have about the homage that Real Madrid will offer you next Saturday in the game against Atletico?
I´m grateful to the Club because of this offering because they give me the possibility to thank the Madrid fans for all the affection I received when I was player in this Club. We shouldn´t forget that I have taken the decision of leaving football after 18 years as professional placer, but that 14 of them I played at Real Madrid. In this sense, I think that the party benefited is Real Madrid, it´s really clear. I always had the feeling that it could happen and it´s going to be so.
Did you feel like saying goodbye to the fans?
I said it once that a game against Athletic, at a full Bernabéu and conquering the title of League would have been the ideal frame to do it, but things went the way they did, and the fact of stepping once more that stadium will be a motive of joy and a very big satisfaction for me.
Now that time has passed, are the wounds closed? Does time cure everything?
It´s not a matter of curing everything or not. I always had something very clear: beyond all of us there is an entity. The Club is Real Madrid and it has an undeniable history. The coaches, the players, the presidents … we all pass by, but once it´s time to say good bye and the Club goes on. I think Real Madrid have give me all, I´ll never deny this. It´s not a matter of having the wounds closed. I never had scar or wounds with Real Madrid.
In a future, would you like to play at Real Madrid?
Right now what matters and what is best for me is to be a bit away of football. Like taking a year off. I want to have time to be with my family, to rest physically and mentally. From then on, I have nothing decided about what I can do in the future. The first thing I want to do is go to rest and then I will see what I decide. I understand that the correct thing now is to take a break.
How would you like to be remembered now that you said goodbye?
Beyond the personal, because each person can have their way of thinking, I would like people to say that I was a good professional and an honest person with my team mates and with the Clubs I worked for. I would be satisfied with that. From then on, each one can take their conclusions.
What do you think you will miss more?
Right now I´m in a cloud. It´s as if I didn´t realize about the reality that I can be facing. I guess that once the preseason will start, the teams began the trainings and the first games of the League begin, it will be when I will feel it and I will see the consequences of the decision I took. It´ll be weird to see that I leave for a holiday and that I don´t have anywhere to join.
What is your best memory of all these years as professional?
There are many memories that i keep, when my debut as professional, the first t-shirt of Real Madrid, of the National team … But one is beyond all that, the year of the Seventh. I have it marked, because I know what meant for the Club after 32 years without conquering that title. And I also remember the last game I played in England, where I received an exemplary treatment.
What was the hardest day of your life as professional?
When I decided to leave the Nacional team. When after being 14 years in Madrid I left, the other day with the last game at Bolton, Tenerife´s leagues… There are some, but I prefer to remember the good ones, that fortunately have been more.
Raúl said the day you announced your leave, that the captain of captains was retiring, what do these words of your friend mean for you?
I can only thank him these words. He is a worthy successor of all the values representing to be captain of Real Madrid. He represents it better than anyone, I´m sure of it. It’s not easy, being so young, to be captain of Real Madrid and the National team, with the pressure it takes, even if people only think that this position only means to wear the armband. It involves a lot of emotional load and work and he stands it really well and very naturally.
What coach has marked you most?
I learned something with all of them and I had good feelings, but if I have to be grateful with someone, this is Cantatore, who gave the opportunity to become professional when I was very young. I feel an extraordinary affection for him.
What message would you like to send to the fans?
I want them to know that it´s difficult to win always, but Real Madrid will be there again and they know it.
Do you think you are going to be moved?
I prefer not to think about it. I don´t know what I will feel. I will try to take everything calmly, but the reaction will be spontaneous and we will see it.

UEFA.com (2000): An inspiration to both club and country, Spanish
international Fernando Hierro has been Real Madrid CF's outstanding
performer of the last decade. Born in Vélez near Málaga in 1968, he
made his name at Real Valladolid before transferring to Madrid for
€2.2m in 1989. Since then, Hierro has won three UEFA Champions
League titles, four Spanish first division titles and one Copa del

as a central midfield player, but has reduced his sphere of
operations to central defence during the latter years of his career.
Yet he continues to offer a goal threat with the powerful long-range
shooting and free-kicks that make him Spain's record international

Hierro the Hero
Bolton Wanderers' 3-2 win over Everton on the last day of the English Premiership season brought the curtain down on the long and glittering career of one of Spain's all-time greats, Fernando Hierro.
Despite the offer of a contract extension and impassioned pleas from team-mates to play another season, Hierro decided that, at 37, the time was right to hang up his boots and return home to enjoy a well-earned rest with his family.
"It's the right time to go. I'm bowing out at the top and I feel proud," said the defender in his farewell address after helping Bolton qualify for next year's UEFA Cup for the first time in their history.
An impressive record
Hierro's playing career spanned 18 years, 14 of which were spent at his beloved Real Madrid. That was where he came into his own as a player and won almost every honour in the game. Wearing his trademark No4 shirt, he marshalled the back line like few others before or since and commanded huge respect in the dressing room. He was the team's undisputed leader and will forever be associated with the Merengues.
Ironically, Hierro's career almost ended before it began when he contemplated quitting after failing to make the grade with the Malaga youth team. Fortunately, the then 17-year-old changed his mind and continued playing amateur football with his hometown side Velez.
His record at the club makes for impressive reading: five Spanish league titles and one Spanish Cup, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two European/South American Cups, four Spanish Super Cups and one UEFA Super Cup. His defining moment was lifting the club's seventh European Cup after almost a 30-year wait. Hierro played a pivotal role in that final win over Juventus in 1998, marking Alessandro Del Piero, one of Serie A's deadliest strikers, completely out of the game.
Vicente Del Bosque, his coach during his final years at the Santiago Bernabeu, lamented the player's departure from the club when it finally came in 2003: "When Fernando left, we lost one of the finest players in Spanish football. I was fortunate to have worked with him in my time here, and he always gave everything he had for the team. He was an exemplary player on and off the pitch and gave his all for the team and the club. He was sometimes criticised for that, but Fernando always acted in the best interests of Real Madrid."

Hierro:
"Football is my life"

Just a few months short of his retirement, the former captain of Real Madrid and Spain sat down with FIFAworldcup.com to chat about his plans for the future, and his memories of a glittering career.
As a defensive iron-man with a superb eye for goal, Fernando Hierro came to symbolise an entire era as captain of Real Madrid and Spain. Currently defending the colours of English Premiership side Bolton Wanderers and relishing what will most likely be his last season in football, the steely Spaniard is proud to still be competing at the highest level.
Just a month shy of his 37th birthday, Hierro agreed to indulge FIFAworldcup.com and take a look back at a memorable career that has taken him to the very pinnacle of his profession. Born in the southern province of Malaga, the young Hierro began his playing days with local team Vélez before moving to Real Valladolid in 1987 and Real Madrid two years later. In his 14 seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu, the former captain won, among other things, the Champions League three times, La Liga five times and the Intercontinental Cup twice, as well as representing Spain in four successive FIFA World Cups™. With a career like that, the only question is where to start.

Was playing in the English Premier League an unfulfilled ambition?
Yes, for me it’s a dream come true because after the Spanish league, it was the only other place that I thought about playing. What attracted me in particular was the way people live and breathe the game over here. When the opportunity arose to play in England at the age of 36, it was not an easy decision. Fortunately, I’d had a year in Qatar, which gave me time to reflect on things. So I decided to return to top-flight football and, truth be told, I’m loving it.
Do you think the Premier League is the toughest league in the world, and how does it compare to the Spanish League?
Well, I think it’s right up there. I spent 16 years playing in the La Liga and believe it’s the most tactical. Having said that, over here (in England) there is a footballing culture and an appreciation of the game that is very special.
How was playing for Al-Rayyan Sports Club in Qatar?
I made the decision to go there because after 14 seasons at Real Madrid, I felt I needed a break. It was a good opportunity for me. The Qatari people were great and I have fond memories of my time there. They were trying to develop the game in their country, so from that perspective it was a rewarding experience, both personally and professionally.
There is still a perception among some people that your departure from Real Madrid in 2003 was rather less than amicable. Is that how it was?
No it isn’t. I said it at the time and I’ll say it again: I think things could have been handled better. The club offered me a one-year contract, but I felt it was the right time to leave. We had just won the title again and I wanted to quit at the very top. Real Madrid know where to find Fernando Hierro, and Fernando Hierro knows where to find Real Madrid. The whole affair was perhaps a bit rough, but there’s no bad feeling. The only thing that remains is the memory of 14 wonderful years.
Now that you have left the club, do you still get upset when things go badly for Real Madrid, like they have done this season?
Listen, Real Madrid is a side built to win. The history and mentality of the team, as well as the people it represents, demand success. A year without a title is a bad year. But this season they are still in contention in La Liga and in the Champions League, and that’s where you’ll see the true Real Madrid. It’s at decisive moments when faced with adversity that the side comes into its own.
Why do you think the team has not lived up to expectations recently?
Well no team is capable of winning the league every year. What happened is that between 1996 and 2003 the side won major titles year after year. That kind of sustained success makes it all the more noticeable when you have a barren spell. Given the club’s tremendous potential, they are well positioned to continue competing for the top honours in the game.
Could it be that after so much success, there is a lack of motivation among some at the club?
No, I don’t think so. Motivation is all about attitude, and I think at Madrid the desire is always there.
You never won a title with the national side. Would you say that was an unfulfilled ambition in your career?
Yes, it’s the one black spot. We always did very well in the qualifiers, but once we reached the latter stages of the major championships, a penalty kick or something or other always got in our way and we invariably failed to get past the quarter-finals. At USA 94 and Korea/Japan 2002 we were so close.
Will Spain qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ ?
I certainly think so. In my opinion, our biggest rival will be Serbia & Montenegro, but I have a lot of faith in the coach.
Has the appointment of the experienced coach Luis Aragonés been good for the Spanish national side?
If there was one coach in Spain who deserved a chance to manage the national side, it was Aragonés. He’s vastly experienced and someone who has been at the heart of Spanish football for a long time. He’ll bring a lot to the team.
Before Raúl overtook you, you were Spain’s leading goal-scorer with 29 goals. In the list of your country’s top marksmen, you are ahead of such legendary strikers as Di Stéfano and Butragueño. Would you describe yourself as a goal-scoring defender or a frustrated striker?
I’m a defender by definition, but not at heart. I’ve always maintained that I’m a defender with the heart and soul of a forward. I never felt like I should dedicate myself entirely to defending. When I played for Spain, I often took up an attacking midfield role, where I ran into space. It’s a position I’ve always liked. I constantly stated my preferences to the coaches, but they ultimately decided where I played. Not to have respected that would have been unfair to my team-mates. But honestly, deep down, I know I wasn’t born to defend.
Your contract with Bolton Wanderers runs out at the end of this season. Any thoughts on what you will do after that?
I don’t know to be honest. It’s possible that these will be the last few months of my playing career. In fact, I thought that I would end my playing days in Qatar until this opportunity came along. Once I’ve quit playing then I’ll start thinking about what it is I really want to do next. Football has been my life. It’s what gives me the most satisfaction, which is why I want to carefully consider my next move.
So we can say for sure that this will be your last season as a player?
I’d say that there’s a very good chance of that.
So no plans of a return to the Bernabéu?
All that is for later. I’m not one of those people who is always looking ahead. For now I just want to enjoy my football and everything that comes with it.
Will you be watching the 2006 FIFA World Cup from the stands?
Yes, I will be watching as a fan, which is always great. Participating in a World Cup is such a marvellous experience that I’ll probably only realise how much I miss it when it comes around. For an international player, nothing compares to playing in the World Cup.
Of the many memories you must have of your career, which one was the best?
Perhaps having played for the best team in the world for so many years and being given the opportunity to play in four World Cups for my country.
And finally, who influenced you most as a coach?
Well, it would be unfair to say. I’ve worked with so many good people. However there’s one person I’ll be eternally grateful to, and that’s Vicente Cantatore. He made it possible for me to become a professional and carve out a career at Valladolid. He made my vocation clear to me and ultimately made me the man I am today.

Don´t miss the video which moved Fernando Hierro
Last Saturday the Bernabéu experienced an emotional moment when the electronic displays at the stadium showed the video that Realmadrid Televisión had prepared for the return of the great Madrid captain to the colosseum of Madrid. And along with the more than 80,000 spectators, the most moved person was without doubt Fernando Hierro. Fourteen years of dedication to Real Madrid collected into some more than emotional images.
Saturday, 21:54pm, the Madrid derby was extended. The electronic displays started to play music and the imaged paralyzed the Bernabéu. It was Fernando Hierro. The more than 80,000 spectators, who made up the ninth full house of the season, stood up. A homage to the captain of captains.
At that very instant, Fernando Hierro came out of the dressing room tunnel alongside Raúl, Torres and the three referees. The player looked up at the stands as he crossed the grass on which he had tasted so much glory, on which so many triumphs had been gathered and above all on which he passed his best years as a footballer. The Bernabéu was ringing with applause which was capable of moving the coldest heart. In unison, the ovation of Madrid gave thanks for the professionalism of a player who dedicated 14 years of his life Real Madrid.
He reached the centre of the pitch, and visibly moved, recieved from the hands of Llegó Raúl, his friend and now successor as captain, a commemoratative Real Madrid shirt and a captains bracelet with his name embroidered on it. After an embrace and sharing so many sensations, Hierro took the honorary kickoff of the derby. While leaving the pitch on the way to the box where he would later watch the game, those who were his fans for so long bid him farewell in another ovation of moving gratitude.
Fernando Hierro appreciated so much what he experienced on Saturday in the place which would always be his home, and he was so moved by the images which summed up in highlights the greatness of his fourteen years in a white shirt, that he asked the club if it would be possible for him to get two copies of the video which so moved him. One for him and another for his family. Some images that he surely watch again and again, when he feels nostalgia for wearing shorts. An unbeatable moment to remember and re-live the pages that he has written in the history of Real Madrid.
