Casillas extends Real contract until 2011

By Simon Baskett
MADRID, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2011 and wants to end his career with the nine-times European champions.
"I've renewed my contract for another five years," the 24-year-old told a news conference on Wednesday. "It's a very happy day for me and now I want to carry on winning things with Real Madrid." Casillas's contract was due to expire at the end of June 2006 and he had been linked with other clubs, including Manchester United and arch-rivals Barcelona.
But the former youth player, who has been one of the club's most consistent performers over the past four seasons, made it clear he wanted to remain with Real.
"I've been saying that I wanted to stay here for the last 12 months," he said. "I've never thought of another club. I want to return the faith they have shown in me by winning trophies. I'm now going to be here until 2011 when I will be 30.
Casillas, who has won two European Cups and two league titles with Real, also said he wanted to end his career at the club.
"When the new contract finishes I want to extend it again until 2016 or 2017," he added. "I grew up here at Real and I want to die here too in terms of my sporting career." Casillas joined the club's youth set-up as a nine-year-old and made his debut for the national under-21 side at the age of 17, helping them win the 1999 World Youth Cup.
The following season he was called up by then coach John Toshack to the Real Madrid first-team squad following injury to Bodo Illgner.
When Vicente del Bosque took over in 1999 Casillas was given a lengthy run in the side and, aged just 19, he played in Real's 3-0 Champions League win over Valencia in 2000.
He was included in Spain's Euro 2000 squad but did not make his debut until a friendly against Sweden, the first of 55 caps for his country.
Casillas won the league title with Real in 2001 before losing his place to Cesar the following season.
EXCEPTIONAL SAVES
But the youngster was the hero of the club's victory in the 2002 Champions League final, however, coming off the bench after an injury to Cesar and producing three exceptional saves to preserve Real's 2-1 advantage over Bayer Leverkusen.
A few days later a freak accident to Valencia keeper Santiago Cañizares, who dropped an aftershave bottle on his foot, made Casillas first choice for Spain at the 2002 World Cup and he has since remained a fixture in the team.
Along with Ronaldo, Casillas was the important player in Real's run to their last major trophy, the 2003 league title.
Madrid-born and a product of the youth-team system, Casillas has become a favourite with the Bernabeu faithful and is seen as being on a par with the so-called "Galacticos" in terms of his influence at the club.

Miracle Hands
by Juan Manuel Rodríguez
Casillas wanted to play out his career with his hometown team, but not at discount prices. He wanted to be paid like one of the team’s galactic stars.
“There is a Ferrari coming behind me” former Real Madrid defensemen Fernando Hierro said of his friend and teammate Raul. The native from Malaga wanted to say Raul would shatter Andoni Zubizaretta’s record for appearances with the national team. And he is well on his way there. All that is left for Raul is to gobble up Zubizaretta’s record and the rest is history. But Raul has also aged very quickly. And behind the “Ferrari,” now up on blocks, comes the fastest, most expensive sports car in the world, a Bugatti Veyron whose engine revs the same as when it rolled off the club’s assemble line to play against Bilbao Athletic Club. It was September 12, 1999 and Iker Casillas was only 18 years old.
Iker extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2011 –when he will turn thirty years old and have the experience and in time to sign another one, the definitive one. This extention was tough and took more than (what) was initially expected because Casillas wanted to play out his career with his hometown team, but not at discount prices. He wanted to be paid like one of the team’s galactic stars. The demanding fans at Santiago Bernabeu started eating out of his hands long ago. His hands have meant salvation on numerous occasions; hands that, for example, miraculously avoided a tie with Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League Final in 2002. In an odd decision that he later could not or would not explain, Vicente del Bosque (the coach back then) benched Iker Casillas and gave the starting goal tender job to Cesar Sanchez, an inferior goalie. But during the final, Cesar got injured and Casillas was decisive in bringing home the team’s ninth European Championship Cup. He is a soccer player with a guardian angel.
It was crystal clear that Casillas was going to stay with Real Madrid. A sports paper wrote Barcelona was interested in signing him. Only Barça? No. Manchester and Chelsea and Milan and Juventud and half the soccer planet were interested in bringing Casillas on board. But Florentino could not let him escape. This indeed would have been a disastrous business move. But if Real Madrid’s President is know for something it is for making good business moves.

Casillas, after his contract renewal: “I want to end my sporting days at Real Madrid”
At just past 1pm one of the most long awaited pieces of news for Madrid fans was made public at the Santiago Bernabéu. Minutes later, in the Press Room of the City of Sports, Iker Casillas appeared, alongside his agent Ginés Carvajal, in front of the media to say that “it was one of his happiest days”. He has committed until 2011, although he says that “later I'll want to carry on for longer”. Congratulations goalkeeper!
With the coat of arms of Real Madrid above his head, on his chest, and on the table at which he was sitting, Iker Casillas gave the good news to the reporters who were surprised by the Whites keeper's appearance along with his agent: “I've just come to tell you that I'll be staying at the Club, that I have renewed my contract with the team and that I'll be here for another five years. You have to carry on putting up with me and me with you. It´s a very happy day, I´m happy and optimistic. Now I want to carry on conquering titles with Real Madrid”. Words of an emotional and satisfied Iker Casillas.
Then it was question time and the moment to explain the details of his contact renewal: “For the last few months I've been saying that I want to stay here, that was my idea. I've never thought about any other club, and I want to thank them for the way they've treated me here, and return their support and trust in the form of titles, successes and more optimism. I'll be here until 2011, when I'll be 30 years old”. The Madrid fans can breathe easily; they'll have the best keeper in the world guarding the net of Santiago Bernabéu during, at least, five more years.
Iker carried on answering the journalists' questions, always with a smile on his face: “When this contract comes to an end I'll want to renew until 2016 or 2017. I want to carry on here for a long time, and my ear to ear grin gives that away. My idea has always been to stay here. I haven't listened to other offers, I grew up in football at Madrid and I want to end my sporting days here”. He spoke of the famous percentage of last week: “Right mow it's at 100%. The situation has taken a change for the better and I'm very happy”.
The news changes from week to week, but Casillas remains calm: “I've always known the truth, despite what is said on the radio, in the press, or on television. We've always tried to talk about things, and both sides have to come to an agreement. I've never had any doubts, and in my head theres always been the idea of staying at Real Madrid. In negotiations you always look out for your own interests, but the most important thing is to come to an agreement. It's true that it's taken a bit of time, but it was worth the bother”. Also he denied other rumours in the press: “If I'd signed something I'd have regretted I'd never have done it. I haven't been called money grabbing; I've focussed on myself, match by match, although it hasn't always been easy, as the future wasn't certain”.

Madrid goalkeeper Casillas agrees to new contract
MADRID, Spain (AP) - Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas agreed to a new five-year contract which ties him to the club until 2011.
Madrid's announcement Wednesday ended speculation about Casillas' future after reported difficulties in negotiations. Spanish media had suggested the 24-year-old goalkeeper, whose present deal expires in June 2006, could join Manchester United or FC Barcelona.

"It's a happy day. I always said I wanted to stay here more than any other club. I'll be here until I'm 30. Let's hope in 2010 we can renew until 2016 or 2017,'' Casillas was quoted as saying by news agency Efe. Madrid gave no financial details.
Casillas made his league debut for Madrid as an 18-year-old in December 1999. Since then, the Madrid-born goalkeeper has gained two Spanish league winner medals and kept goal in Madrid's Champions Cup triumph in 2000. In 2002, he was left on the bench for the Champions Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen, but made a starring 25-minute substitute appearance to help Madrid lift the trophy for the third time in five years. Since then, Casillas has been Madrid's first-choice 'keeper.
He is expected to be Spain's No. 1 in next year's World Cup in Germany.

Brilliant Casillas ready to pay back Real Madrid's financial leap of faith
“MAYBE there should be a Golden Gloves award,” Iker Casillas said as he contemplated the Golden Boots, Golden Balls and general slaps on the back flying around for Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho, the Barcelona pair. Despite another extraordinary season for the Real Madrid goalkeeper, Casillas did not make Fifa’s top-30 shortlist for World Player of the Year. Although, as consolations go, a new five-year contract, worth about £6 million a year, is not bad.
At 24, Casillas has already made more than 350 appearances for Real Madrid and Spain. He has two Champions League winners’ medals and two Spanish Championship medals and last month Real Madrid finally came up with the cash for his new deal, making him the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.
The contract was handed out a little begrudgingly. Casillas is home-grown, not an expensive import who helps to market the club abroad. And he stops goals — he does not score them. “It’s goals that count, and all Casillas ever does is stop them,” you can almost imagine someone in the Madrid boardroom saying as the money men hesitated over his new deal. Sanity reigned eventually, though, and Real decided to put their future in a safe pair of hands.
Casillas rejected the club’s original offer, closer to £4 million, and next month would have entered the final six months of his contract, leaving him free to talk to the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona. Outraged fans were preparing to collect names for a petition before Saturday’s home game with Getafe. The queues to sign the protest would have been almost as long as the queues to get into the ground. In the eyes of most supporters, the club of Galacticos has had only one player worthy of the description in the past two trophyless seasons — their goalkeeper.
So, was the delay in tying him down a sign of how undervalued the goalkeeper is at Real Madrid? “I hope not,” he said. “It’s a basic point, really. A goalkeeper makes a mistake and you lose a game. It’s very important to have a good keeper — it gives the whole team security. Goalkeepers win matches, too. I always thought in the end we would end up arriving at an agreement. But in this situation it’s down to the club — if they they want you, they initiate the process. If they don’t want you, there is nothing you can do.”
That Real left it so late to tie their star man down and his absence from that Fifa top-30 list, last week whittled down to a top three, reinforce the point that good goalkeepers have a tough time getting noticed. Raúl, who by his own admission has struggled in recent seasons, made the Fifa top-30 but Casillas, who has been in the form of his life, did not. “I just have to keep working hard,” he said . “It can annoy you but the best thing you can do is just use it to motivate yourself to get into the top 30 next year. A goalkeeper does have to be extra special to be recognised in that way. Maybe there should be an award for the best goalkeeper . . . Golden Gloves or something like that.
“There are lots of good goalkeepers around, all with different styles. Petr Cech, at Chelsea, is a great goalkeeper. But you also have [Gianluigi] Buffon at Juventus and Dida at Milan. Each one has his own particular qualities. I’m pleased if people think that I’m in that category because it means I am doing things properly. But I have to keep working hard to keep proving that I am one of the best.”
The bumper pay deal that still leaves him trailing Ronaldo, Raúl and Zinedine Zidane has at least put him in line with Real’s next bracket of earners, such as Roberto Carlos. Casillas has been at Real Madrid since he was 11. He travelled in Europe with them as second goalkeeper at the age of 16. He was training with the first team before he was old enough to drive and used to get the train into work while his team-mates pulled up at the training ground in sports cars. He made his debut at 18 under John Toshack. He has come a long way since and the reaction of the fans at the thought of losing him prompted the club to offer him the £6 million-a-year deal. It is still not Galactico money but, as Ginés Caravajal, Casillas’s agent, said: “It is the going rate for the best young goalkeeper in the world.”
England may be next stop
When Iker Casillas was 11, he wanted to be like Peter Schmeichel. If things had not worked out with his contract negotiations, the Spaniard was in little doubt where he wanted to go — the league in which his idol became a legend.
“Schmeichel was my hero,” Casillas said. “I would not say he was what made me want to become a keeper because ever since I was old enough to think for myself, that is what I wanted to do. But as an 11-year-old I watched the 1992 European Championship, Denmark won the tournament and Schmeichel was fantastic.
“I admired everything about him. He was a great presence in the goal. His distribution, his clearances from crosses and his shot-stopping were all superb.”
And on the possibility of following his hero to the Premiership, Casillas said: “If I had to leave Spain, I think it would be to move to England: for the people involved in the game there and for the fans. The game is valued in a different way. The people have a good understanding of it and respect good players.”

"I want a victory to celebrate my contract renewal"
He has been the figure of the week after renewing his contract with Real Madrid until 2011. Iker Casillas thinks about the future and in his mind there's only one word: win. At least, he wants to achieve a title this season. He says that bad moments are over and that "the team goes forward".
- How many congratulations have you received these days?
:: A lot. People who appreciate me and love me have treated me very well. But I haven't got time yet to answer to every message and every call. These days have been crazy. I've been sent more than 100 messages!
- Do you sleep calm now?
:: I've slept happy because I will stay five more years where I want, because I will not be better anywhere but here, and because I have my family, my friends, my girlfriend. What else would I want!
- How many times have you thought that you had to remain?
:: I have never thought it, because I was sure that I was going to stay here. Everything related to the word Real Madrid is deep in my mind since I was eight, that's why I have never thought about it.
- Have you signed the contract of your life?
:: I hope more contracts come and them to be better than this one, but the best contract in my life is to stay here, in this club. Everyone thinks in the economic part, which is normal, but this badge attracts a lot...
- Have you realized how much people love you?
:: Yes, I have. People have given me lots of tokens of affection in the street, and I hope I can give them back that confidence and affection playing football, doing things right and achieving many titles. People deserve enjoying our game and that is something we are going to achieve.
- Manchester and Barça can't bid to get you any more...
:: The important issue was my relationship with Real Madrid, not with other teams. It has always been good, with an excellent treatment. I have already said that I want to thank the club, the president and the supporters for being there again.
- What have they told you at home?
:: They are very happy. They have suffered also and are happy about what has happened to me.
- You will give them some present...
:: The best present is that their son stays in Madrid and doesn't go to anywhere else.
- Lately, you seemed a little bit sad and thoughtful.
:: Well, a little, but I have isolated the renewal from my work. There have been some ups and downs, but everything has been got over. Cut and thrusts are usual. One says what one wants, the other one offers... This is so.
- Have Florentino Pérez phoned you?
:: Yes, he has. We have spoken a little, but I haven't had much time these days.
- It is said that your renewal has turned out to be a galactico's signing.
:: I don't think I am a galactico, it is to extend the contract of a player who has been here all his life. They told me that I deserved a presentation, but I didn't want it. We must respect our colleagues when they renew their contracts.
- Was it a real load off your mind?
:: Yes, because now I will not be asked anymore about my renewal. I will be able to speak just about sport.
- Let's go then. Are you capable of winning titles?
:: Yes, and there will be some this season. I do not want to sell optimism, but we will go to La Cibeles. I always say it.
|
- How do you feel?
:: It took me some work at the beginning, but now I feel good, comfortable and at ease. I feel confident, which is the most important thing.
- Was your renewal the best piece of news to cover up the crisis?
:: No, we go forward. Personally, I must stay the same and not change my way of being. I want to enjoy the moment of my renewal with a victory before Getafe. This doesn't stop. Then Olympiacos, Málaga or Osasuna will come... What I have done yesterday is not worth anymore, I must be at my best level. I can't get relaxed and must continue like this to sign one more contract.
- Time goes by so fast!
:: That's true, very fast. I am at my best maturity moment. I have started to shape my life and I want that all the good things that I live occur here. I am a veteran. I am the second player in the national team with more matches, I have played more than 300 for Real Madrid... When I think that in 2002 I believed that I wasn't playing in First Division anymore...
- Is the team afraid of Getafe?
:: Never. The target is to keep the goal to zero and do a great match. We must repeat the result of last year.
